Waterbury Crime Stoppers (WCS) is a non-profit community organization
geared toward public involvement in the fight against crime. It offers
CASH rewards up to $1000 and ANONYMITY to citizens who provide
information that leads to an arrest of a criminal.
How does Waterbury Crime Stoppers work?
A special telephone with a well publicized number is provided to the community. (WCS does not
subscribe to the caller ID telephone feature) When a call is received, a fact sheet is filled out. The date,
time and detailed information from the caller is included. The call taker then assigns the caller a
code number. This number is used in subsequent calls to Crime Stoppers and if and when any
reward is paid to the caller. All callers remain anonymous, with no pressure to reveal their identity
and still collect their reward.
If a caller’s information results in the arrest of an offender or the apprehension of a wanted
person, arrangements are made so that the person can receive their reward in CASH and
preserve his or her anonymity.
The Waterbury Crime Stoppers Board of Directors approves the reward amount to be paid. The
determination of the reward is based on information presented by the Waterbury Police
Department liaison. The Board of Directors does not know who called in the information - only
the facts of the case and the caller’s WCS code number.
Why Do We Need Waterbury Crime Stoppers?
WCS is based on the principal that “someone other than the criminal has information that can
solve a crime” and was created to combat the three major problems faced by law enforcement in
generating that information:
- Fear of REPRISAL
- An attitude of APATHY
- Reluctance to get INVOLVED
Waterbury Crime Stoppers works around these problems by providing a toll-free number, which
allows callers to remain completely anonymous. WCS also adds the incentive of a CASH reward
whenever information given leads to an arrest.
How is the Program Administered?
The Board of Directors and Associate Members is comprised of concerned citizens of the
Waterbury Area who oversee the operation of the organization.
How is the Program Funded?
Contributions are solicited from service organizations, social clubs, business men/women,
corporations, local businesses, interested residents and fundraising events.
Does Waterbury Crime Stoppers Work?
